MISSING MALAYSIA AIRLINES FLIGHT MH370 - Over 1 Million People Search Satellite Images For Clues
A search for Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370 found nothing Thursday after Chinese satellite images showed what appeared to be debris from the missing plane at a possible crash site.
"There is nothing," Malaysia's civil aviation chief Azharuddin Abdul Rahman told reporters in Kuala Lumpur after planes were sent to scour the area.
"We went there, there is nothing," he said, deflating the latest tantalizing lead in the six-day hunt.
The Wall Street Journal, meanwhile, reported that U.S. investigators suspect the plane flew on for four hours once it lost contact with air traffic controllers, based on data from the plane's engines that are automatically downloaded and transmitted to the ground as part of routine maintenance programs.
The report raises questions as to why the Boeing 777 would have been flying without contact, and if anyone would have been in control during that time. U.S. counterterrorism officials are considering whether a pilot or someone else on board intentionally disabled the jetliner's transponders to avoid detection and divert it, the report said.
The hunt for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 has been punctuated by false leads since it disappeared with 239 people aboard about an hour after leaving Kuala Lumpur for Beijing early Saturday.
The plane was heading northeast over the South China Sea when it disappeared, but authorities believe it may have turned back and headed into the upper reaches of the Strait of Malacca or beyond.
Satellite images of possible debris from the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 have been released on a Chinese government website.
Agence France-Presse quoted US officials as saying that US spy satellites had detected no sign of an explosion in the area at the time. The system has detected such heat signatures in the past but none was discovered this time, the officials said.
'All right, roger that'
US spy satellites detected no sign of a mid-air explosion when a Malaysian airliner lost contact with air traffic controllers, American officials said Wednesday.
The US government in the past has used its satellite network to identify heat signatures linked to exploding aircraft but in this case, nothing was found, according to US officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The absence of evidence of any mid-air explosion has added to the mystery surrounding the fate of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, which disappeared at about 1730 GMT Friday after taking off from Kuala Lumpur bound for Beijing.

Malaysia Airlines passport theft echoes al-Qaeda agent's bomb attack digitalglobe tomnod
A top terrorism expert says the use of stolen passports on flight MH370 "eerily" resembles a 1994 attack on a Philippines flight by an al-Qaeda-linked hijacker and represents a "massive security failure."
As the missing Malaysia Airlines flight focused international attention on passport fraud, Carl Ungerer, an independent security consultant and former adviser to former foreign affairs minister Bob Carr, said there was a thriving market for stolen and doctored documentation in south-east Asia.
